Or is it?

SEO stands for “search engine optimization”

Oddly enough, everyone seems to have learned about and uses the expressionSEObut a majority of have no clue what SEO means.

Why do I need SEO for my website?

SEO is essentially what web developers do in order to help make your website more appealing when the search engines, typically Google, appear to index and rank your internet site. SEO has been around since their early era of web development and a lot has evolved since then.

Hey! Can you believe this?

Within the early 1990’s, the consumer did not have a clue about search engine optimization, aka “SEO” and for the most part, did not care.

After the online world slowly became a lot more competitive, did the words “SEO” start to attract attention.

Companies, anxious to compete on the net, desiring first page rankings on Google became desirous to determine what might be completed to influence the rankings. Seemingly overnight, many so-called SEO “experts” did start to appear until SEO itself had been a profession all to itself.

Alongside that came a vast degree of snake oil practices, shady promises and totally fantastic and outrageous claims such as “we can get your website on the front page of Google – guaranteed”.
SEO
is not magic. Real SEO consists of some hard work!

A book could be written about the whole SEO debacle and the circus that it became. Lately, plenty of On-line marketers use the buzzword SEO to describe something in extremely broad terms beyond what it really is.

Why “black hat” SEO tricks are rampant

Although Google through it’s various algorithm implementations has caught on to a lot of the tricks and penalized and also banned websites for working with these methods, you can still find some debatable practices still in place including PBN’s (private blog networks) and link buying.

Unfortunately, resulting from misuse and employing loopholes in “white hat”, or proper SEO practices, many of the old tried and true techniques of search engine optimization including reciprocal links now are much more of a gray area in comparison to was previously.

Some of the older SEO tactics that could enable you to get banned or penalized by Google:

  • Stuffing non-relevant keywords within your meta-tags and content which might be of obviously intending to sway the rankings on your side.
  • Hidden keyword text. Such as, white text on a white background.
  • Link farms. For people with paid to really get your url on another site that’s sole existence is sharing links, this will get back to haunt you by means of lower rankings or perhaps a total ban in the search rankings.
  • Getting involved in PBN (private blog networks). Recently, many websites got slapped down by Google as they were linking between other blogs and websites that they can created solely for circulating link traffic.
  • Posting your link on forums and irrelevant websites and blogs. While this might not exactly ensure you get banned, they’re considered “low quality” links (many of which might be “no-follow” links anyway) that may nullify your SEO attempts.
  • Set it and forget it solutions. Often touted by what are known as SEO experts, many of these automated building back links tools and article spinners could cause you major headaches when you get caught.

2018 Update – What’s Working (and not working) for SEO as of late?

As outlined by Miguel Lopez of SEOlogism, listed below are 3 common, old SEO mistakes that people have been making:

  • Keeping your site updated with fresh, quality content
  • Focusing on long tail keywords
  • Not proactively building links

What??? The first two has come about as a bit of a shock but the third makes sense. But as Miguel says churning out new content with long tail keywords is basically a waste of time these days.

Ok, okay so what IS helping effective SEO these days?

According to Miguel, the following are much more productive strategies of search engine optimization. The bottom line is focusing in on finding excellent resources, which is people that have the ability to share and to create links aimed at your web.

  • Proven Content Frameworks
  • Content Promotion and Link building
  • UX Signal Optimization

If a couple of the above mentioned bullet points seem to be a bit obscure, well that produces sense!

Honestly, they are not “silver bullets” or easy to implement. Contact us for consultation about SEO and local SEO (which is a little different but also important) to find out more about effective search engine optimization strategies for 2018 and beyond.
